Course Fully Open - with no restrictions

On Thursday July 6th we were privileged to be invited by our chosen charity The On-Course Foundation to the charity’s annual golf day at The Royal Household Golf Club in Windsor Home Park, in other words, in the Queen’s back garden. With the temperature in the 30s it was something of a relief that the shot gun start Texas Scramble competition was on 9 holes only as it is a 9 hole course.

Each team of 5 comprised 3 supporters or sponsors, an On-Course “client” & a member of the Royal Household Golf Club. Our On-Course member was Simon Jones, who is known to some Puttenham members as he has been on Peter Crockford’s tour. He is an ex Royal Marine, medically discharged out of the service after being blown up by an IED in Afghanistan & suffering injuries to his back & backside. Puttenham member Calvin Coleshill, who bid for a place on the Charity Day in our Pro-am auction, was playing in one of the other teams, as was Simon’s friend Ian Bishop, aka “Bish”, who was blown up in the same explosion as Simon & lost both legs.

We had a most enjoyable round, scoring well on a very dry & dusty course as there is no on course watering at all, scoring well enough in fact to come second in the competition. This was followed by an excellent tea & a chance to mingle with the On-Course members, some of whom have achieved remarkable things since being helped by the charity. One is now a golf professional & several of them told us how much the charity & the game of golf has helped them in their recovery & to get back to a normal life. Their positivity & willingness to look forward rather than back is inspirational & it was wonderful to see how much they enjoyed the day & humbling to see how they are overcoming the physical & mental problems they have been left with after their years of service in the Armed Forces.

Thank you to all of you who supported our fund raising efforts during our captaincy year, the charity & its members are extremely grateful to Puttenham Golf Club & the magnificent amount of nearly £17,000 raised is being put to very good use.
